Vol. 118 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports of Non-Galvanised Buckets.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that large quantities of non-galvanised (black) buckets have been recently imported with the intention of having them galvanised in this country; that this represents an evasion of the object for which import restrictions were imposed on the importation of galvanised hollow-ware; that if such imports are permitted to continue, they will seriously affect the employment of Irish workers in the galvanised hollow-ware industry; and whether he will state what steps he proposes to take in the matter.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware of any project involving the importation of iron buckets in ungalvanised condition for galvanising within this country; and, if so, whether he proposes to take any action to protect the interests of workers presently employed in the manufacture of such buckets.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to answer Questions Nos. 35 and 36 together.

I am aware of the position as stated by the Deputies. The Industrial Development Authority is at present actively investigating the matter.
