Vol. 118 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Subsidy Payments.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state, for each of the financial years from 1941-42 to 1948-49 and 1949-50 to date, the total amounts paid in (a) food subsidies, (b) bread and flour subsidy, and (c) wheatenmeal subsidy.

As the information asked for by the Deputy is of a statistical nature, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to include in the Official Report a statement giving the particulars requested so far as food subsidies paid from the Vote for Industry and Commerce are concerned.

Since the 1st April, 1949, the food subsidies which continue to be paid from the Vote for Industry and Commerce are in respect of tea and sugar but there are, in addition, charges to the Vote since the date mentioned to meet arrears of subsidy on bread and oatmeal outstanding in respect of previous years and these charges are included in the statement. The bread subsidy as such was discontinued as from the 21st February, 1948 and the subsidy on oatmeal applied only to oats from the 1947 crop milled in the period from the 1st September, 1947 to the 15th April, 1949. From the 1st April, 1949, the subsidies on flour and wheatenmeal have been paid from the Vote for Agriculture and the payments made in the current financial year are not included in the statement.

PARTICULARS OF FOOD SUBSIDY PAYMENTS FROM THE VOTE FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRY AND COMMERCE FOR EACH OF THE FINANCIAL YEARS FROM 1941/42 TO 1948/49, AND 1949/50 TO 26TH NOVEMBER, 1949.
