Vol. 118 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authority Employees.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will take the steps necessary to extend the time for making applications for increased pensions under the Local Government (Superannuation) Act, 1948.

It is not my intention to introduce legislation on the lines indicated by the Deputy.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state when it is proposed to establish suitable arbitration machinery for employees of local authorities, similar in principle to that provided for civil servants and analogous to the machinery available in the Labour Court to employees of private employers.

This matter is at present being examined by my Department in conjunction with the other Departments of State concerned with local authority staffs.

Is the Minister aware that this matter was fairly fully debated in 1946, during the course of the passing of the Industrial Relations Act? The principle was then very largely agreed upon by the Government. Surely three years affords ample opportunity to reach a decision?

I agree with the principle but the details have not yet been worked out.
