Vol. 118 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Compensation to Fishermen.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the cause of the delay in paying compensation to net fishermen who had operated in certain lakes and rivers in South Kerry, and are now deprived of their calling.

I assume that the net fishermen referred to in the question are former employees who have lost their employment as a result of the cessation of netting in freshwater fisheries. The number of claims for compensation received from such persons in South Kerry is 22 of which 12 have been paid. The remaining ten claims have proved to be inadmissible under the terms of Section 35 of the Fisheries Act, 1939.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary bring to the notice of the Minister the desirability of amending the law so as to give the cases now inadmissible an opportunity of renewing their claims?

I will bring the Deputy's representations to the notice of the Minister.
