Vol. 118 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tory Island Mail Deliveries.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware that, owing to the breakdown a few months ago of the mail contractor's motor boat, the delivery of mails to Tory Island from Meenlaragh post office, now operated by a small sailing boat, is uncertain and irregular; and, if so, whether, pending the repair of the mail boat, he will direct the contractor to provide or engage another motor boat in order to improve the present unsatisfactory deliveries.

I am aware that the mail service to Tory Island has been irregular during the last two months, but I am advised that this has been due more to the bad weather conditions than the breakdown of the contractor's regular boat. Although the contractor has two small boats available with which the service is being maintained pending repairs to his regular boat, these are not satisfactory for regular service, and the contractor has been instructed that his damaged boat must be repaired for service without delay.
