Vol. 118 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sligo-Dublin Trains.

andMr. Roddy asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he will make representations to Córas Iompair Éireann with a view to having a dining car attached to the Sligo-Dublin trains throughout the journey instead of only during the Mullingar-Dublin section as is the present practice.

I have made inquiries from Córas Iompair Éireann in this matter. The company have informed me that the number of passengers travelling on the trains between Dublin and Sligo would not warrant the expense involved in providing dining cars for the whole journey.

I should like to point out to the Parliamentary Secretary that there are two parallel bus services —one starting at 10 in the morning and the other at 1 o'clock. The first train leaves at 8.30 and the second at 2.40. Could the company not arrange to have some of the passengers diverted from the buses to the trains, if it is considered that the present number of passengers by train is not sufficient to support a dining-car on the train for the whole journey?

I shall have the Deputy's views conveyed to the company.
