Vol. 118 No. 16

Committee on Finance. - Pensions (Increase) Bill, 1949—Money Resolution.

I move:—

That it is expedient to authorise such payments out of moneys provided by the Oireachtas as are necessary to give effect to any Act of the present Session to provide for the increase of certain pensions payable in respect of public service.

The payments out of moneys provided by the Oireachtas which will be necessary to give effect to the Pensions (Increase) Bill, 1949, amount to approximately £195,000 a year, as follows: Increases to national teachers, £119,000 a year; increases to civil servants, £44,000 a year; increases to police, £32,000 a year; total, £195,000.

Increases to secondary teachers costing £4,000 a year will be borne on the Secondary Teachers' Pension Fund, and increases to widows and children of former Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries, costing £500 a year, on the Central Fund. In addition, increases to widows and children of former members of police forces for which provision is being made by Order will amount to £11,000 a year. The total cost will, of course, decrease from year to year as pensioners die.

Increases to employees of local and harbour authorities, and of the Electricity Supply Board, will be charged to the funds of the authorities concerned.
