Vol. 119 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware that some Garda Síochána stations are at present understaffed with the result that additional hours of duty must be worked by the existing staffs, and whether, in view of this, it is proposed to reopen recruiting for the Garda in the near future.

Although recruiting for the Garda Síochána has been suspended for nearly two years, the strength of the force at present is not abnormally low. The total strength on 31st January was 7,151, which does not compare unfavourably with the pre-war figures. On 31st January, 1930, the total strength was only 6,984 and on 31st January, 1939, the figure was 7,140.

Mr. Byrne

Is the Minister aware that no member of the Garda has been on duty at the Lord Edward Street entrance of McKee House, and people drift in there to ask in the various offices for information as to where they are to go? Will the Minister see that the Gardaí are of sufficient strength to ensure that these old posts will be restored?

Might I point out that the Deputy did not suggest a word of that in the question? That is a matter for the Commissioner who, I am sure, is aware of the needs of that particular place.

Mr. Byrne

When that has been removed——

Question No. 27.
