Vol. 119 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export Organisation.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the desirability of encouraging the export of Irish-manufactured industrial commodities, particularly to the dollar area, consideration has been given to the creation of an export organisation capable of conducting market research and making all the relevant information available to traders, with a view to enabling Irish producers and exporters to enter foreign markets as far as possible on equal conditions with British and other competitors; and, if so, whether he will state the result of such consideration.

Continuous consideration is being given to the methods which might be adopted to develop an export trade in Irish manufactured goods. The possibility of establishing an organisation of the type to which the Deputy refers is not being overlooked in the examination of the problem.

Can the Minister state whether such an organisation is in operation in Britain for the benefit of British exporters to the continental and American markets?

I dare say there is but that does not necessarily mean that it would be suitable for our circumstances.

I am not necessarily suggesting that, either, Sir.
