Vol. 119 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Maintenance of Works.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state what arrangements have been made for the future maintenance of works carried out under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949.

The Act empowers local authorities to maintain works carried out by them under it, but it imposes no obligation on the local authorities in the matter. In so far as works undertaken by local authorities are designed to protect property for the maintenance of which the local authorities are already responsible, the works carried out under the Acts should relieve rather than add to the local authorities' maintenance expenses.

I take it that it is clear from the Minister's statement that the Government have no responsibility in the matter of future maintenance?

That is clearly indicated in the Act.

The Minister might make that clear to his followers down the country.
