Vol. 119 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Slate Production.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state how many tons of state were produced from our slate quarries in each of the years 1938, 1939, 1948 and 1949.

The quantity of slates for roofing produced in Ireland was 9,676 tons in 1938, 7,622 tons in 1939, 3,098 tons in 1948 and 2,900 tons in 1949. The figure for 1949 is provisional.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the orders which the Killaloe quarry owners have in hand at the moment will take ten years to complete? Is he also aware that the price quoted for covering a roof with Killaloe slates is £126 as against £72 for Portuguese? In these circumstances, how does the Parliamentary Secretary expect private enterprise to use Irish slates for housing?

Both supplementaries should be addressed to the Minister for Industry and Commerce.
