Vol. 119 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - House Purchasers' Legal Expenses.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware that legal expenses exceeding £120 per house are incurred by purchasers of new houses in Ennis and whether he will state what steps he proposes taking to reduce these expenses to a reasonable amount.

I have no functions in this matter. The remuneration of solicitors in respect of all conveyancing business is prescribed and regulated by general orders made by a statutory committee constituted under the Solicitors' Remuneration Act, 1881, as adapted by the Solicitors' Remuneration Act, 1881, Adaptation Order, 1946. General orders, when made, must be laid before both Houses of the Oireachtas for one month before they take effect and either House may, within that period, annual an order in whole or in part.

Does that mean that the Minister does not propose to give any redress in this matter?

Can the Minister say, or is he aware, that the suggestion contained in the question is or is not correct? It sounds ridiculous.

The statutory committee, composed of the Chief Justice, the President of the High Court, the senior ordinary judge of the Supreme Court and the President of the Incorporated Law Society, is the committee which makes the order. I can request that committee to have the matter reviewed.

Will the Minister request the Deputy to give him particulars of these alleged expenses?

The Minister says he has no function in the matter.
