Vol. 119 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Seed for Forestry Purposes.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the amount of seed, indicating species and sources, which has been (a) ordered by the Department of Lands for forestry purposes, and (b) delivered to the Department and if he will further state what results, if any, in respect of variety and amount, have been achieved in the collection of native seeds.

(b) Six hundred and fifty lbs of abies pectinata, 200 lbs. of pinus contorta and 150 lbs. of scots pine have been received. Further deliveries are expected at an early date, but owing to failure of the crop of several species it is anticipated that neither abies grandis nor Japanese larch will be received and shortages are likely in the seed of pinus contorta, pinus insignus and tsuga hetcrophylla.

The home collection of seed is under way at present and appreciable quantities of scots pine, pinus contorta, Japanese larch and European larch cones have been procured. In addition, the forestry division's requirements of hardwoods (oak, ash, beech, alder, etc.) are likely to be secured in full. It is not possible to give exact quantities until the seeds have been extracted and cleaned.
