Vol. 119 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Erection of Bridges.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider the erection of a Baily or similar temporary bridge over the Gweebarrow River, County Donegal, because of the total collapse of the existing bridge and in view of the fact that some time must elapse before a permanent structure can be erected.

This is a matter for the Donegal County Council. I understand that temporary repairs are being carried out to the existing bridge and that it is hoped to have it opened to light traffic this week.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of the urgent necessity for a bridge over the Derrywee River on the Galway-Clare border at Scalp on the Flagmount-Gort Road, to enable children to get to school and farmers to reach fairs and markets during winter periods of flooding; and, if so, whether he will request the county councils of Clare and Galway to erect such a bridge and indicate to them the amount of grant which he will provide to enable them to do so.

The provision of a bridge on a public road is a matter for the local authority or authorities concerned. I will have the Deputy's representations brought to their notice. The local authorities have already been informed of the grants available for road works in the coming financial year.
