Vol. 119 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bonus on Northern Flax.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether, as he promised in reply to a supplementary question on 14th instant, he will now state the amount of the subsidy or bonus per stone which the Six-County Government have agreed to pay to the growers of flax in that area.

The Six-County Ministry of Agriculture have announced standard prices for hand-scutched dam-retted flax of the 1950 crop ranging from 41/-per stone for Grade I to 33/6 per stone for Grade VI. I believe, as I told the Deputy on 14th instant in reply to his supplementary question, that these prices contain an element of subsidy; I regret that I am unable to state the precise amount, as it appears to depend on a variable factor, namely, the world price of flax at the date of the commencement of the marketing of the 1950 crop.
