Vol. 119 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tax Concession for Cinemas.

andMrs. Rice asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider the introduction of proposals for legislation to restore the tax concession for cinemas presenting a 51 per cent. variety show in conjunction with the night's principal picture.

The answer is in the negative. The concession referred to in the question gave rise to such abuses that it had to be withdrawn. It is believed that its restoration would lead once more to the type of abuse previously practised.

Does the Minister not agree that the tax concession, if reintroduced, would be an incentive to the development of local talent?

The talent was mainly the abuse I referred to.

But where it is genuinely got over?

In these very limited circumstances I shall consider it, but they are not arising anywhere.

Would it not be very desirable that rural life should be brightened by local talent rather than by imported American trash?

Decidedly, but the talent got a bit perverted.
