Vol. 120 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Valentia Island—Road Workers' Grievances.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware (1) of the serious dissatisfaction which prevails in Valentia Island because a number of people in that area, genuinely seeking work from a local road ganger, are unable to obtain it even when such work is available; (2) that serious discontent exists as regards the method of supervision exercised by the ganger; and (3) that the type of inquiry recently held in connection with those grievances did not fully and fairly sift and investigate the nature of the complaints; and, if so, whether he will take the necessary steps to allay the anxiety felt in the district by having a full inquiry made into the accuracy or otherwise of the allegations made.

I have no detailed information on this matter. Any inquiry conducted into the matter was arranged by the county council. If the Deputy desires my Department to intervene he might send me any available details of the allegations and of the grievances which he considers still require to be redressed.

Did the Minister ask for a report of the inquiry that was held?

No, because this inquiry was not sponsored by the Department of Local Government or by the Minister responsible; it was sponsored by the Kerry County Council.

Will the Minister now request a report of the inquiry, even if it was not sponsored by the Department?

Would it not be better for the Deputy to do as I have suggested? If he does that, any information that is available will be sent to him.

All right.
