Vol. 120 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Gangers' Qualifications.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the qualifications required for appointment as ganger under the rural improvements and minor relief schemes, and whether every step is taken to ensure the selection of the most competent and popular appointees.

The principal qualification required for gangers is satisfactory service and experience in the supervision of workmen and in the various operations involved in the classes of work usually carried out as minor schemes for the Special Employment Schemes Office, and similar works.

Where a ganger with previous experience is not available, the most suitable and promising candidate is selected.

Popularity is not regarded as an essential qualification.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary state who appoints the gangers?

The Special Employment Schemes Office.

That is safe enough.

There used to be a Parliamentary Secretary charged with that job.

Particularly in the Phoenix Park and the Botanic Gardens.

Question No. 43.

The Molly Maguires of Monaghan have come up now.

Question No. 43 has come up now and should not be interrupted.
