Vol. 120 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Women Land Workers.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider the question of granting the same rebate in rates in respect of females working on agricultural land as that granted in respect of male workers.

Amending legislation would be required to give effect to the Deputy's suggestion and, on the information before me, I do not consider that an amendment of the law for this purpose would be warranted.

Is the Minister aware that on some farms there is no help available but female labour for doing agricultural work?

Rebates for agricultural relief are given principally for the purpose of relieving unemployment. In 1949-50 employment allowance was paid in respect of 105,690 men, of whom 57,904 were employees and 47,786 relatives. To give effect to the Deputy's suggestion would be difficult and undesirable.
