Vol. 120 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Insurance Syndicates.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce, if he will state the names of the insurance syndicates that were carrying on business in Ireland in 1935, and the names of those that are still licensed by him.

Licences were issued under the Insurance Act, 1936, to 51 syndicates of Lloyd's underwriters which had been carrying on business in this country in 1935. These licences are still valid. The Insurance Act, 1936, requires the names of the persons constituting a syndicate to be furnished on applications for insurance licences, but does not require the syndicate to be named. The licences issued under the Act only specify the names of the persons constituting the syndicates. There are many hundreds of persons included in these syndicates, and a considerable amount of work would be involved in preparing a list of the names of those who are members at present. A register of licences is kept in my Department, which is available for inspection, and which contains the names of the persons included in the various syndicates.
