Written Answer. - Public Works Expenditure.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of the Departments of (a) Finance, (b) Industry and Commerce, (c) Agriculture, (d) Justice, (e) Education, (f) Defence, (g) Posts and Telegraphs, and (h) Lands (i) the total amount expended in the Vote for Public Works and Buildings under the sub-head for New Works, etc., over the periods (a) 1st April, 1932 to 31st March, 1940; (b) 1st April, 1940, to 31st March, 1946; (c) 1st April, 1946, to 31st March, 1948; (ii) the average annual amount provided over each of the periods; (iii) the average annual revenue over each period; (iv) the proportion of (ii) to (iii) expressed as a percentage of the latter; (v) the amount of the expenditure over each period which was regarded as capital and defrayed out of borrowed moneys; (vi) in respect of each period the average annual expenditure so defrayed; and (vii) the proportion of (vi) to (iii) expressed as a percentage of the latter.

The information asked for is as follows:—

As regards headings (v) to (vii) of the question, I would refer the Deputy to the reply to headings (iii) and (iv) of his similar question of the 4th May last relative to the total amount provided in the Vote for Public Works and Buildings over the same period.

I wish to give notice that, with your permission, Sir, I will raise the subject matter of Question No. 37 on the Adjournment to-night.

That will be considered.

I would like to give notice that I wish to raise the subject matter of Questions Nos. 18 to 24 on the Adjournment to-night.
