Vol. 121 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Re-afforestation.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that approximately 300 acres of land in Glaniff, Cliffoney, were offered to the Forestry Section, and part of it visited by an inspector of the Department, during the years 1934-36, and that since then further land to the extent of approximately 100 acres has been offered; and, if so, if he will state what steps have been taken to deal with the matter and whether the proposals are still being considered, and further, whether, in view of the long delay which has already occurred, he will arrange to have the matter expedited.

In 1934 the Forestry Division opened negotiations for the purchase of 706 acres of land, of which 325 acres were plantable. The owners declined to initiate the necessary subdivision applications and the negotiations lapsed.

Four plots were offered for sale to the Forestry Division this year. These have been scheduled for early inspection and an effort will be made to reopen the cases which have lapsed.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what progress is being made by the Forestry Section towards using the lands in the Drumkeerin area which were offered for afforestation purposes and which were the subject of inspection and negotiation with some of the owners ten years ago, and whether, in view of the long delay in dealing with the offer, he will arrange to have proceedings expedited.

The negotiations in question were abandoned as the lands could not be purchased for forestry purposes at an economic price. A recent offer of land in this area is being investigated and any further offers will be fully considered.
