Vol. 121 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Provision of Sub-post Office.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware that severe hardship is experienced by residents of the Roches Buildings-Old Youghal Road area in Cork City as a result of the lack of a sub-post office; and, if so, if he will consider establishing an office in the area.

In view of the close proximity of the post offices at Barrackton, MacCurtain Street and Blackpool the cost of establishing another post office to serve the Roches Buildings-Old Youghal Road area, Cork City, would not be justified.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the post offices he has mentioned are situate at least half a mile from the area in question, and that the residents I refer to live on one of the steepest hills in Cork which has a reputation for the steepness of its hills? In view of the hardship which is caused to these residents by reason of that fact, would he ask the Minister to reconsider his attitude on this point?

The fact that there is such a long steep hill may be a consideration, but I do not think it is correct to say that the nearest post office is over a half mile away. In some cases, it may be two or more furlongs. At any rate, I shall convey the Deputy's request to the Minister.
