Vol. 121 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Courtown Estate.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (a) the number of pigs reared in the Courtown estate by the Irish Tourist Board during 1949; (b) how were they disposed of; (c) the amount they realised; (d) whether the estate fruit and vegetable gardens are cultivated, and (e) whether the greenhouses and vinery and the estate generally are kept in good repair.

I have no functions in the local administration of the properties at present held by the Irish Tourist Board, but I am informed by the board that during 1949 they reared 37 pigs on the Courtown estate, of which 23 were sold for £87 4s. 0d., 11 died and three are still in the possession of the board. I am also informed that the fruit and vegetable gardens on the estate are being cultivated, that the greenhouses and vinery, which were in poor condition when purchased, are being rehabilitated, and that fencings and avenues are being maintained in reasonably good condition. Works necessary to arrest damage to the main building are also in progress.

Could the Minister say the cause of death in the case of the pigs that died?

I understand they died from eating Wexford apples.
