Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Clare County Council Workers.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (a) the number of road workers employed by the Clare County Council on May 15th, 1949 and 1950; (b) the number of workers employed by the council on schemes under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, at May, 1949 and 1950; (c) the number of schemes sanctioned under that Act by his Department for the council at May, 1949 and 1950, and the amounts of money allotted to these schemes at each of these dates; and if he will further state the cause of the delay in sanctioning schemes this year for similar works.

(a) The number of men employed by Clare County Council on road works in May, 1949, was 1,038. Statistics as to employment in mid-May, 1950, have not yet been submitted to the Department. (b) The Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949, had not become law in May, 1949. The particulars for mid-May, 1950, are not available. (c) As regards May, 1949— nil. As to May, 1950, the position is as stated to the Deputy in reply to his question of the 10th instant, namely, that the council have been informed that, pending determination of the total amount of the grant which will be made available in 1950-51 for schemes under the Act, they may forthwith undertake works up to an estimated cost of £20,000 from a list of 64 works, totalling £45,236, to which approval has been notified.

There has been no delay in sanctioning schemes.
