Vol. 121 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Provision of Telephones.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state the reason for the protracted delay in providing a public telephone at Kildimo Post Office, County Limerick.

Work was resumed in January last on the telephone call office scheme which had been in abeyance for some time previously owing to pressure of more urgent work.

A call office will be installed at Kildimo Post Office within the next 12 months.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state (a) how many miles of telephone cable from Dublin to Cork have been laid and the present location of the cable-laying work; (b) the average distance covered per day, and (c) the period which will elapse before the automatic service can be provided at the present rate of progress.

(a) Since work commenced in February last, approximately 70 miles of cable have been laid. The portion between Dublin and Port Laoighise has been laid, and the cable-laying gangs are now operating on the Port Laoighise-Limerick section.

(b) The average rate of progress for the combined cable-laying gangs has been about five miles per week.

(c) It is expected that circuits between Dublin, Naas, Droichead Nua, Kildare, Curragh Camp and Port Laoighise will be available by the end of this year. The scheme as a whole is scheduled for completion in the first half of 1952.
