Vol. 121 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost-of-Living Index.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the cost-of-living index for food only assuming that the official index price for sugar, tea, and flour were modified to include the quantities of these commodities sold at the unrationed price as a proportion of the total quantity sold.

There is no official control of the distribution of unrationed sugar, tea and flour and no reliable figures are available from which estimates can be made of the "off the ration" retail purchases of these commodities by direct consumers. It is, therefore, not possible to give the information requested by the Deputy.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the interim cost-of-living index figure for mid-February, 1950, for (a) all items; (b) food; (c) clothing, and (d) fuel and light.

The interim cost of living index figures for mid-February, 1950, to the base August, 1947=100 were:—All items, 100; food, 98; clothing, 106; fuel and light, 101.
