Vol. 121 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rush Water Shortage.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that there is a shortage of water in Rush, which badly affects tomato growers in the area, some of whom have to draw water in lorries and carts a distance of four miles; and whether, in view of the importance of this work, he will arrange to provide the area with an alternative supply of water as soon as possible.

As I pointed out in reply to the Deputy's question of the 13th July last on this subject, the local authority's statutory responsibility is limited to the provision of a supply of water for domestic purposes. The county council, while satisfied that the main supply in Rush is sufficient for domestic requirements, has nevertheless taken steps to augment the supply to serve other needs. Two additional sources have been tapped, and a further improvement in the supply is expected within a short period.

Is the Minister aware that it is in the summer time apparently that the county council starts to look for water when the warm weather comes and water is very low? Furthermore, is the Minister aware that the general supply in North County Dublin is bad? I would like the Minister to state whether it is possible that he would consider the recommendation which was sent to his Department regarding the tapping of the Ward river as the North County Dublin regional scheme seems to be shelved. The position is very serious in that area.
