Vol. 121 No. 11

Written Answers. - Expenditure on Minor Relief Schemes.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (a) in respect of each county the number of minor relief schemes sanctioned for the years 1938-39 and 1949-50 and the expenditure thereon; and (b) the total expenditure upon minor relief schemes for the period 1932-33 to 1948-49.

I take it that the question refers to what are officially called minor employment schemes. The figures, county by county, for 1938-39 are set out in Schedule "A" subjoined. The county figures for 1949-50 are not yet available, but the number of schemes sanctioned for that year was 883, and the total expenditure £103,000 approximately. The latter figure is subject to check and audit. I should point out, however, that the figures for 1938-39 and 1949-50 are not strictly comparable, for the reason that in 1938-39 there was no expenditure on bog development schemes (for emergency production) or on the rural improvements scheme. If these schemes are added to the 1949-50 expenditure, the total amount is approximately £251,000; in 1938-39, virtually the whole of the expenditure was on minor employment schemes. The expenditure on minor employment schemes for 1932-33 to 1948-49 is as set out in Schedule "B."
