Vol. 121 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Stone Imports.

Mr. Brady

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what restrictions are imposed on imports of monumental and architectural stone (a) in the rough and (b) dressed.

I propose, with the Ceann Comhairle's permission, to take these two questions together.

Stone which has been dressed, polished, carved or otherwise worked is subject on importation to payment of a customs duty at the rate of 100 per cent. (full) 66? per cent (preferential) ad valorem. Marble, whether worked or unworked, is also liable to the same customs duty. Monumental and architectural stone imported in the rough is not subject to payment of customs duty.

I am prepared to consider any representations made by the stone quarrying industry for maintaining the quarries in full production.
