Vol. 122 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Protection for Irish-made Machinery.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether there has been any application by manufacturers of agricultural machinery in this country for any form of protection from foreign competitors.

Representations for restoration of the suspended duties on agricultural machinery, in so far as they affected land rollers and plough parts, were received from three manufacturers on five occasions in all between December, 1944, and November, 1948. All five applications were refused.

In May, 1950, a similar application was received from an employers' association and is under examination at present.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether there have been protective tariffs in respect of agricultural machinery during the years ended 31st December, 1947, 1948 and 1949.

The duty on agricultural machinery (33? per cent., 25 per cent. pref., tariff ref. No. 142) has been suspended since 1941.
