Vol. 122 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price Control.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the present system of price control in relation to essential commodities is not effective in giving the fullest measure of protection to the consuming public; and, if so, whether he will take such steps as are necessary to afford the fullest protection possible.

The system of price control is devised to ensure that the fullest possible protection is afforded to the consuming public. The trend of prices is kept under constant review and where the position demands any tightening of the present controls appropriate action is speedily taken. I would remind the Deputy, however, that no system of price control can be completely effective without the fullest co-operation from consumers themselves.
