Vol. 122 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Corps of Tourist Guides.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that serious inconvenience and disappointment is caused to visitors to Dublin and other parts of Ireland by reason of the fact that no trained guides are available, and if he will take the matter up with the Irish Tourist Board or other appropriate authority so that a corps of guides may be organised and trained to meet the growing need for this service and good employment created for a considerable number of Irish citizens.

I understand that Córas Iompair Éireann and certain travel agencies provide guides for tours which they organise and that these services are adequate to serve the purpose for which they are provided. There are, however, no guide services available for tourists generally and it is possible that the absence of this facility is a cause of inconvenience and disappointment to visitors. I propose to have the matter fully examined.
