Vol. 122 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballina Water Supply.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the cause of the delay in sanctioning Sections 1, 2 and 3 of the water works scheme approved of by the Ballina Urban Council at a meeting held on the 24th January, 1950, and submitted to his Department on the 29th January, 1950, and whether in this connection he is aware that the council have also a housing scheme of 48 houses at an advanced stage of construction at Tyralley Park, the highest level of the town, and that the houses, even when finished, cannot be let until the water supply is available.

The data necessary to enable the schemes to be examined were received on the 25th February last. The proposals have since been examined by an engineering inspector and the Department's observations and suggestions in regard to the scheme have been issued to the urban district council. Arrangements are now being made by the local authority for their consulting engineer and the architect for the housing scheme to attend a conference in the Department with a view to disposing of outstanding matters.

I am aware that the houses referred to cannot be supplied with water until an improvement scheme has been carried out, and I will make every effort possible to have the scheme expedited.
