Vol. 122 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that a farm of land containing 71 acres has been offered for sale by Miss Linda Vahey, Aughalusky, Ballyvary, County Mayo, and if he will ask the Land Commission to acquire this land for the relief of local congestion.

The question of the particular lands to be acquired or resumed is solely a matter for the Land Commission and depends on the suitability of the lands for the Land Commission's statutory purposes and whether they come within the powers of acquisition or resumption conferred under the Land Acts.

As the holding in question was recently advertised for sale, the Deputy may have in mind its purchase by the Land Commission under Section 27, Land Act, 1950. It will be obvious that if the Land Commission's intentions in such cases were made known beforehand, it might place the Land Commission, other prospective purchasers and the seller at a serious disadvantage. Deputies will be doing a disservice to their constituents if they endeavour to elicit information as to the Land Commission's intentions, or exert pressure, in regard to particular holdings available for purchase under Section 27, Land Act, 1950.

The Minister need not worry.
