Vol. 122 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Profit-Sharing.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the teaching in the Papal Encyclicals concerning the desirability of establishing a profit-sharing system between worker and employer, he will arrange that some such system be introduced without delay in Government-sponsored companies, and particularly in Córas Iompair Éireann, Electricity Supply Board and Bórd na Móna; and whether he will recommend similar action to Irish industrialists, who should give a lead in initiating this very desirable improvement in employer-employee relationship in Irish industry.

I do not think the time is opportune for me to take the initiative on the lines suggested by the Deputy in relation to either Statesponsored bodies or private commercial enterprises.

Is it not a fact that the Constitution depends on certain principles, and is it not a fact that the Dáil might expect an example from the Government in following the teaching of Papal Encyclicals in connection with the introduction of such a system?

I think the Deputy will appreciate that any gesture towards profit-sharing in most of the State-sponsored companies would be rather an empty gesture. I am afraid the profits would not be there.
