Vol. 122 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Acquisition and Division.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether lands at Kippagh, Kinsale, County Cork, have been offered to the Land Commission by the owner, Colonel Wright; and, if so, whether the offer has been accepted.

After full consideration, the Land Commission decided not to acquire these lands.

Would the Minister be good enough to say why the Land Commission decided not to acquire these lands? Is it a question of noncongestion, or what?

I think it is because the lands are not regarded as suitable for Land Commission purposes.

Not suitable? Considering that these lands are definitely good, may I ask the Minister if he will have the matter reconsidered? There is also the question of congestion to be taken into consideration.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (a) the date upon which lands at Newcastle, Blarney, County Cork, were resumed by the Land Commission; (b) what steps have been taken to redistribute these lands, and (c) the reason for delay in their allocation.

These lands came into the possession of the Land Commission only last April.

Is it not a fact that the Land Commission have been dealing with the question of resuming these lands for the past two and a half years? Considering that they have been dealing with the matter for that length of time, is there any hope at all of the lands being divided before next spring, so that they can be put to use rather than have them wasted?

The Land Commission took possession of these lands as recently as 21st April. I would point out to the Deputy that land is never allotted during the late spring or the summer months. The scheme for the division of these lands is being prepared. I do not see any reason why they should not be allotted by next spring, provided always that the Land Commission are not waiting to get other lands into their possession to enable them to make a bigger scheme in the area.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have proposals for the acquisition of the holding in Knocknashammer, Gurteen, County Sligo, whose owner is at present in America.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission propose to acquire the lands of Rhue, Folio No. 6282, owned by Mr. Patrick Maye, Curroyboy, Tourlestrange, County Sligo, for the purpose of relieving congestion in the district.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take together Questions Nos. 8 and 9. The question whether these or any other lands will be acquired or resumed depends on (a) their suitability for the purpose of the Land Commission, and (b) whether the restrictions imposed by the Land Acts or other relevant circumstances permit of their acquisition or resumption.
