Vol. 122 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Weather Station.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the purposes for which the proposed weather station at Roches Point, County Cork, is required, and if his Department has sole responsibility for locating the station in this area.

In my reply to the Deputy's question on 15th March I stated that the new meteorological station at Roches Point would be established for the purpose of making observations of the weather there.

The station will be one of a network of observation stations selected to give a representative country-wide coverage of weather conditions. The observations made there will be utilised, in conjunction with similar observations from a number of other stations in Ireland and abroad, for the making of forecasts at Shannon and Dublin Airports.

The answer to the second part of the question is in the affirmative.
