Vol. 122 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost-of-Living Index Figure.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state whether the cost-of-living index figure is calculated on the same basis for rural areas as for cities and towns.

The prices used in computing the interim cost-of-living index (essential items) are those returned at each quarterly date from 120 towns and villages. The weighting pattern of expenditure from which the index number is computed is based on the expenditure of family income on the various items of food, clothing, fuel and light and rent of the whole class of which the head of the family is a non-agricultural employee, whether gainfully occupied or pensioned.
