Vol. 123 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Old Age Pensions.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he has given consideration to the representations recently made on behalf of old age pensioners regarding improved conditions, the withdrawal of the means test and increased pensions, and if he will state his decision on these matters.

Since this Government came into office the rates of old age and blind pensions have been increased and the means test has been modified in favour of claimants by the Social Welfare Act, 1948, with the result that the yearly cost of these pensions has been increased by approximately £2,250,000 and the number of beneficiaries by over 12,000. As I have stated on a previous occasion, the Government's next steps in the matter of social security are indicated in the White Paper on that subject. These proposals are embodied in the Social Welfare (Insurance) Bill which will be before the House at an early date. When these proposals are implemented the question of improving the old age pensions scheme will be considered.
