Vol. 123 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Restrictive Trade Practices.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the date on which he began consideration of the question of restrictive trade practices and the decisions, if any, he has now arrived at; and, further, if he will state when he hopes to be in a position to introduce proposals for legislation to deal with the matter.

The examination of restrictive trade practices was commenced a little over 12 months ago. Consideration of the matter has reached an advanced stage but I am not yet in a position to make a statement as to what action it may be found practicable or desirable to take for safeguarding the public interest.

The Taoiseach is of course aware that the people are suffering considerable hardship and losing considerable money through the operation of these restrictive trade practices. Might I ask him as Taoiseach, as well as representing the Minister for Industry and Commerce now, to see that whatever legislation is necessary to curb these harmful practices will be introduced as quickly as possible?

Subject to a liberal interpretation being put on the words "as quickly as possible," I will undertake that the matter will be given the most careful consideration as it has been.
