Vol. 123 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Scope of Rents Commission.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state whether the commission recently set up to inquire into housing rents will also investigate the rents charged for flats and rooms both furnished and unfurnished.

The terms of reference of the recently appointed Rents and Leaseholds Commission require the commission to inquire, inter alia, into the working of the Rent Restrictions Acts, 1946 and 1949, and into the question of controlling the rents of furnished dwellings. Accordingly, flats and rooms, whether let furnished or unfurnished, come within the scope of the commission's inquiry.

Is the Minister aware that some months ago the Minister for Justice stated in this House that legislation to deal with the question of furnished rooms and flats was being prepared? I should like to know what has happened to that legislation.

That is another question. The Deputy will appreciate that I gave a full and, I hope, a satisfactory answer to his question. If he will put down another question, we will try to answer it.

He might get another commission.
