Vol. 123 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bread Ration.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will consider increasing the weekly ration of bread and flour by 25 per cent. on the ground that the present ration of 6 lb. of bread or 4½ lb. of flour per person is not sufficient for adults in rural Ireland.

No. I am satisfied that the interests of rural workers receive special consideration under the flour and bread rationing regulations.

Under these regulations additional allowances of flour and bread are granted to turf workers and to agricultural workers residing not less than two miles from their place of employment. In addition supplementary allowances are granted during the harvest period to bona fide harvest workers. In the 1950 harvest period extra rations were granted to 775,000 applicants during a period of nine weeks ended 13th October, 1950.
