Vol. 123 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - The Pope Hennessy Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that the road through the Pope Hennessy estate, Rostellan, was left in an unfinished condition by his Department, that it is at present impassable and that the Moyeely Creamery have refused to send their lorries to collect milk from the farmers while Córas Iompair Éireann found it impossible to bring in their lorries for the collection of beet; and, if so, whether he will ensure that the road is completed, repaired and put in condition so that it may be taken over by the county council.

The road in question was completed by the Land Commission in 1947 and was then in very good condition. The Land Commission have no liability for the maintenance of the road. They have asked the county council to take it over.

They have asked the county council to take over a road that would cost £2,000 to repair after the Land Commission had left it.

The Land Commission spent £840 in putting it into repair and they have no liability for its future maintenance. The Deputy's duty, as a member of the county council, if he wants to benefit the people in that area, clearly is to use his influence to get it taken over by the county council.

The Land Commission should first make the road.

The Land Commission made the road and left it in good condition. The Deputy wants to shirk his responsibility in that way.

The Minister wants to shirk his responsibility.
