Vol. 123 No. 12

Social Welfare (Insurance) (No. 2) Bill, 1950—First Stage.

I move that leave be granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to establish an extended system of social insurance providing for pecuniary payments by way of disability benefit, unemployment benefit, maternity benefit, widow's pension, orphan's allowance, retirement pension and death grant and for treatment benefit, to repeal or amend the existing enactments relating to national health insurance, unemployment insurance and widows' and orphans' contributory pensions, to amend the Old Age Pensions Act, 1908, and for purposes connected with the matters aforesaid.

Can we have some information about this Bill?

It really should not be given unless the First Reading is objected to.

It is proposed to ask the Dáil to agree to the discharge of the Social Welfare (Insurance) Bill 1950, and to take this Bill instead.

When will this Bill be circulated?

Over the week-end.

I suppose we can place as much reliance on that as on the previous statement.

The Deputy will be able to have an article on it for next Wednesday.

Leave granted.
Second Stage ordered for Thursday 14th December, 1950.
