Vol. 124 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Bog.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will request Bord na Móna to provide a hot plate at Tullyard bog, County Donegal, in order that workmen may obtain suitable meals during working hours.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that the provision of a hot plate where the location of work is continuously moving from one end of a bog to another is a very difficult matter. Moreover, the board has found that workers prefer to light their own fires convenient to their work rather than travel even a short distance to a shelter where such shelters are provided.

May I suggest that it would be quite possible for Bord na Móna to provide this hot plate and thereby save the time involved in workmen lighting fires?

I understand that Bord na Móna are examining the feasibility of that proposal.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will request Bord na Móna to provide (a) ample shelters, and (b) covered transport and protective clothing for men at work on Tullyard bog, County Donegal, during inclement weather.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that three shelters are already provided on Tullyard machine bog, County Donegal, and a fourth will be placed on this bog within the next few days. The board consider that four shelters will provide ample accommodation. Covered transport is, in fact, being provided on the bog railway at present. With regard to protective clothing, such clothing is made available by Bord na Móna at cost price to all workers on Tullyard bog who wish to purchase it.
