Vol. 124 No. 5

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Vocational Education Officers' Salaries.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state (a) the date on which proposals for salary increases were submitted to him by the vocational education officers' organisation; (b) the date of any conference he had with the executives of that organisation on increased pay and the dates on which salary increases were granted to the chief executive officers of vocational education committees, primary and secondary teachers, and university professors.

The proposals referred to by the Deputy were received by me on the 10th February, 1950. I had a conference with representatives of the central executive committee on the 21st April, 1950.

Improved scales of salaries for chief executive officers of vocational education committees, for primary teachers and secondary teachers were brought into operation as from the 1st January, 1950. I have no information such as the Deputy desires in respect of university professors.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state whether he has received any requests from vocational education committees for increased remuneration for their teaching staffs; and, if so, whether he will indicate the names of the committees and the cause of the delay in settling the proposals of the vocational education officers' organisation, together with the date on which he intends to make his proposals.

Since the beginning of this year I have received requests from 14 committees asking for the introduction of improved scales of salary for vocational teachers.

In the examination of proposals for improved scales of salary in cases where remuneration is conditioned, as is that of vocational teachers, considerable delay is necessarily involved.

I have not yet been able to get the consideration of the matter brought to a conclusion, and regret therefore that it is not possible for me at this stage to give the further information asked for.
