Vol. 124 No. 5

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - North Clare Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether he is aware that about 1,000 acres of good arable land are held by ten individuals in the Carron district of North Clare, and that these individuals do not reside on these farms and do not use the land for tillage or dairy purposes but let it for grazing purposes to others, or for grazing for their own cattle; further, whether representations have repeatedly been made to him on behalf of the large number of landless men and uneconomic holders in the area as to the desirability of acquiring and distributing this large area of land amongst them with a view to increasing wealth production for the State; and if the Land Commission has considered or will consider the propriety of taking such action.

Representations were made regarding the acquisition of ten estates in the Carron district, County Clare. The Land Commission have completed their investigations in three of these cases and have decided to take no further action. The others are the subject of inquiry and decisions will be taken in due course.

Can the Minister say what is the area of the three estates in respect of which it has been decided not to take further action?

I have not that information with me.
