Vol. 124 No. 5

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take business on the Order Paper in the following order:—Nos. 4, 1, 3 and 7. The debate on No. 1 will be interrupted from 7 to 8 p.m., to take Nos. 3 and 7. It is proposed that Government business be not interrupted at the time usually fixed for Private Deputies' business.

Mr. Byrne

Will the Taoiseach say if the Government will give time for the consideration of the motion concerning old age pensions standing in my name and in the name of Deputy Cowan?

I shall consider the matter next week.

I wish to protest against taking Private Deputies' time for Government business. We are in the position that there are 34 motions on the Order Paper by Private Deputies, some of them for the last 12 months.

On a point or order. It has been the invariable practice of this House not to take Private Deputies' business while the financial business is under consideration.

I suggest that it is the Government's duty so to order their business that it will not be necessary to interfere with Private Deputies' time. For the past three weeks the House has not met on Friday which would be the second day on which Deputies would have an opportunity of discussing motions which they had tabled. I think it is grossly unfair and something should be done so as to ensure that motions will be taken before they are completely out of date.

Will time be given to complete the debate on the motion standing in my name which has already been taken?

It will depend on the state of the financial business.

You gave three hours last week to knock Cork fellows out of a job.
