Vol. 124 No. 5

Written Answers. - Income-Tax.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state, in respect of the five latest years for which the figures are available, the total number of persons or firms taxed under each income-tax schedule, distinguishing in respect of Schedule A, between persons or firms taxed in respect of (a) lands and farmhouses, and (b) dwellinghouses and business premises.

Income-tax statistics are not compiled in such a form as to enable the information asked for by the Deputy to be given.

It has been estimated, however, that the total number of persons effectively liable to income-tax for each of the past five years were:—

1945-46

137,000

1946-47

152,000

1947-48

155,000

1948-49

179,000

1949-50

200,000

These figures must be regarded as no more than approximations.
